QUICK ROUND CUSHION TUTE

Hello,

If you read my last post found here… you will know that I’m more than a little gushy over round – cushions of late. Since then, my search for the perfect round –  cushion has continued and whilst I have found a worthy bunch right here (always such amazing things at Castle and Things!), I still haven’t been able to source any magical one’s in the reals. So I thought that I’d share a super – quick to make, round – cushion tutorial with you … it’s an easy one to do (you don’t have think too hard at all) and it is a very therapeutic thing to make… I do hope that you enjoy;

• Sewing Machine
• 1.2 meters of wool felt
• 55cm cushion insert or larger
• A large round circle shape (I used my laundry basket lid)
• Scissors
• Chalk or Crayon
• Pins
• 2 x large buttons (If you decide to add the decorative fabric button)

TIP:

Choose a large cushion insert for your round pillow. You want it to be bigger than your cushion cover so that you achieve a really plump – looking cushion.

• Fold your fabric evenly in half
• Using your large round circle shape, trace around it using your chalk or crayon (as seen above)
• Carefully cut your circle shapes out
• Then give each circle a good stretch in many directions – I do this to enhance the textural look of the felt
• Pin both circles together, allowing a seam of 1.5cm from the edge
• Sew your circles together leaving an opening of 15cm
• Fold your cushion insert in half and mould it thoroughly inside your round cushion cover to achieve a round and plump shape.
• Pin the opening shut, allowing a 1.5cm seam and then carefully sew your cushion shut.
• Lastly, mould your cushion into the perfect round cushion shape. You can also pull your seams apart to give your cushions more of a ruffled look.

TIP:

I used a 3.5-length stitch (because it will give you a more professional-looking stitch). Lastly, to achieve a  perfectly round circle, do the following;

• lower the speed of your sewing machine,
• use the machine seam guides or alternatively make your own straight edge with cardboard and tape it to your machine, then as you sew, but your fabric edge up against it (this method gives you a beautifully straight edge). And lastly,
•  stitch over the exact same point on your pins every time

BONUS TIPS:

When you stitch your cushion closed, make sure that you stuff your cushion insert way inside the cushion so that you are able to sew your seam more easily.

Fabric buttons are easily made by cutting out circles about 2 cm larger than your button. Hand sew around your circle about 0.5 cm from the edge and pull it tight over your button. Tie a double knot with your cotton, then using a separate needle and thread hand sew your button on directly through the centre of your cushion.
