The Artist – James Guppy at Jan Murphy Gallery
I seem to be channeling my inner art fanatic today – I would normally say critic but I’ve nothing negative or remotely bad to say so that’s not terribly fitting either. Yes, as most of you would already know – I’m all about the love here so lets run with this “arty-party” mood of mine and I do hope you enjoy!
I first came across the work of artist, James Guppy in our local rag – I found his artworks framed in their vintage – goodness so very intriguing.
I am quite partial to a vintage frame “perched-on-wall” in any shape or form really however his art left me wanting to see more and I simply had to share it with you too.
So I popped over to the Jan Murphy Gallery in Fortitude Valley. The James Guppy exhibition “How sweet is the shepherds sweet lot!” runs until September 27 if you happen to be a Brisbane local and are able to visit too. If not, just check out his work below.
His art works are beautiful, moody, honest and magical. They are also fabulously absurd and their satire, possibly even chuckle worthy. They really do sit like little portals on the art gallery wall which transport you through conflicting eras, locations, time-zones and emotions. I do love art that is capable of all that!
I also quite liked that the art works were created around the vintage frames as an inspiration point and not as an afterthought.
I do hope you have enjoyed this little arty fix as much as I :-). If you would like to know more about these beautiful works please visit here.

p.s As per the direct image links – all photographs are via Jan Murphy Gallery – purely because I felt the artist would appreciate less glass glare and reflections from the images I took during my visit.
I can see why you like these paintings Rachel, they are beautiful and so very clever… I visited the Jan Murphy Gallery for the first time on my last Brisbane trip, the exhibition then was great as well, and the staff were lovely! Jasmine x
Hi Jasmine, I think I’m going to become a regular at JMG! Yes, I too thought the staff v approachable and friendly which is always refreshing – there was even the friendliest little dog to chat with :). I too think James Guppys work is just so clever! Thanks for dropping by Rx
I really adore these Rachael for a lot of the reasons you’ve stated. The vintage style frames initially sparked my interest but the pictures are quirky and interesting. LOVE! 🙂
Thanks for dropping by lovely! They really make the mind tick – poetic images are rare. Night gorgeous lady!! Xx
I love paintings that tell a story that I can actually get rather than have to wildly guess at lol xx
I understand what your saying Son’s – You can understand allot about these artworks simply by observing :-). Their complex but in a completely fathomable way!
