Interior Styling in the 70’s
The 70’s were such a fabulous era for interior styling and many facets of design. Perhaps you too are familiar with certain aspects of it?.. I personally remember my own parents house being quite revolutionary but many houses were during this time. Our home had blue and green toned shagpile carpet paired with geometric wallpaper in deep teal, black and gold. Our lounge-room had its own bar, mid century art and a large black and white cowhide rug. I remember my neighbour even had a hi fi radio in their loo which I personally believe is nothing short of genius.
The following are 70’s design’s that have earned their staying power among today’s modern style trends; they are definitely keepers!
Geometrical Wallpaper Designs
Whilst used with more restraint, large geometrical wallpaper designs are again hugely popular. They also blend superbly well with modern and contemporary style lines.
Cowhide Rugs
Cowhide rugs might not be everyone’s cup of tea and I get that, however their resilience and popularity is still highly evident now. Their god-given textural and warmth-adding qualities enhance natural and organic style touches and look particularly great paired with a wood finish.
Shagpile Carpets / Rugs
Shagpile rugs are timeless; it’s the simple textural goodness found in these rugs that still make them so popular today.
Pendant Lights
Pendants in the 70’s were quite futuristic and bold like. Disco-roll and finger point onward to 2015 and you will find that lighting design can be just as pronounced, we just tend to style them in more reserved ways.
Shelving
Lastly, it is so great to see that the experimentation that occurred in shelving in the 70’s is still alive and just as visually exciting today. As seen in the below images, shelf – like – art can really enhance a space or nook in exciting and functional ways.

Pendant lights over my kitchen bench would be a very pleasing addition to my home right now. I love the look of them in your pic. Multi coloured shag pile carpet is something I can live without, and the really bold geometric wallpaper… we had the clashes of all clashes with those two in our lounge room when I was a kid. Not nice on the eye at all. How times change hey!
