Holidays and time away from the everyday grind are treasured times for our family. And they’re not something that I will ever take for granted. Our family holiday planning involves the same simple “recipe”, involving research, planning and saving to make the dream become reality. Over the years we’ve stayed in a range of accommodations of varying budgets. However, budgets aside, the most successful of these accommodations were homes that were styled with a full heart and maintained with love, effort and enthusiasm. These are the kind of places that I and many others will want to revisit over and over. These holiday homes have their calendars regularly booked-out and are the motivation behind me writing this blog post. NO 1. LOVE YOUR CLEANER!
Let’s get that all important hygiene chat over with first. I believe that your cleaner plays a hugely important, if not “one of the most important roles” in the ongoing success of your holiday home. Make it your business to ensure that your home is hygienically cleaned after each stay. If there is a decent sized break between bookings – a quick refresher will also be required. I firmly believe that if you show that you care for the maintenance and cleanliness of your holiday home, your holiday makers will too! The following is a list of tips that your cleaner should always pay detailed attention to;
NO 2. USE A STYLIST TO HELP YOU CREATE A MEMORABLE SPACE
Talk with a stylist about creating a consistent style – story for your home that will create a memorable look and feel throughout. This is important because your guests, want to feel like they’re on holidays, when they visit your home. They want to feel relaxed. And be moved by the all important details that your home offers. A stylist can assist you with completing this task. Or alternatively do the design work for you; this is where they will source furniture and decor items to suit a your home’s – brief, on your behalf. A good stylist will also have industry contacts and will know how to source artworks, decor items, bed linen and kitchen ware at trade prices in order to have your home looking its best. You’re wanting your holiday house to feel next level. And using a stylist to achieve this will save you money, both in the short and long term. You want your home to look highly loved and adored and a good stylist will know a handful of ways to do this;
NO 3. QUALITY FURNITURE IS VERY IMPORTANT
I will always recommend buying a well made lounge over cheap varieties because adding to landfill is senseless consumer – behaviour. It does not benefit your back pocket nor help the environment in anyway, especially if you’re needing to buy a replacement lounge in 5 years time. You could potentially – consider buying a well made, second hand lounge if you have budget considerations. However, it’s hugely important that lounges, beds, pillows and cushions are comfortable – be prepared to spend money on these and quality bedding in order to save money later. And always use waterproof covers on all your beds. A good cotton sheet with a high thread count will last you much longer than any of the cheaper varieties. Lastly, knowing how to choose a lounge fabric that will last and is easily cleaned is also important. Buying well saves us money in the long run.
NO 4. BECOME SOCIAL MEDIA SAVVY
Start a Facebook, Instagram and Twitter account for your holiday rental. Post regular pictures of your home, wall vignettes, cosy lounge scenes, surrounding attractions, surrounding views and share things that inspire you. You could invite your guests to do the same and ask them to tag you in the pictures. Relationship building is a two ways street – therefore allow yourself to be inspired by others on social platforms such as Instagram and Pinterest. Hold competitions and discounts for loyal followers especially during quiet seasons. Build a genuine – experience around your home and the people will follow.
NO 5. LOCAL RELATIONSHIP BUILDING IS A MUST!
Connect with other local business in your area both in person and via social media. Local relationship building is always overlooked and extremely undervalued on both sides. If a local businesses see the passion you have for creating a genuinely lovely holiday experience for your customers – you will always be at the forefront of their minds for future recommendations. You can also help support each other by sharing knowledge and upcoming promotions.
NO 6. REPEAT CUSTOMERS ARE THE BEE’S KNEES
Think of ways to get repeat customers through a small discount or maybe an extra night free. Your regular guests are your homes – people. And they will keep coming back to enjoy more experiences if your holiday rental always feels like home.
NO 7. FEEDBACK
Always ask for feedback from each of your bookings – do leave a form to be completed as I think people are less likely to email surveys when they return home. Communication is always knowledge therefore don’t be afraid to seek honest opinions; this will always be very useful information.
NO 8. JOURNAL THE LOVE
Start a blog or story about your journey as an airbnb / holiday home host – tell us stories about your home and décor. Document your favourite treasures. You can also tell us about the best walks to do in your area, the best places to eat and must do’s while we are visiting. The journal will be further evidence of your love and dedication towards your business. Lastly, make sure that you holiday in your home so that you have a greater understanding about its strength and weaknesses.
